By Christiane Paul
…Digital media have facilitated a form of “re-mediation” in the sense of a reconfiguration of both the possibilities of media systems and the connections between art and media, in particular. While these reconfigurations have been an ongoing process throughout the history of media arts, the digital medium and its networked characteristics have proposed new models for questioning and restructuring these systems. A significant subcategory of new media arts essentially consists of alternative models for media systems and tools — “artware” that is “not just art” but a proposal for the restructuring or critique of existing media systems. Open Source Artware
Processing
Processing is an open source programming language and environment for people who want to program images, animation, and interactions. It is used by students, artists, designers, researchers, and hobbyists for learning, prototyping, and production. It is created to teach fundamentals of computer programming within a visual context and to serve as a software sketchbook and professional production tool. Processing is developed by artists and designers as an alternative to proprietary software tools in the same domain.
Art InterfaceDevice
A collection of strategies for making art with electronics.
An open standards platform for creative use of electronics.
A learning tool that builds confidence with electronics through incremental learning and examples.
An electronics development kit that assumes non-engineers.
A repository of shared art-tech “recipes”.
The main tool is a microprocessor platform for creating responsive art.
The associated AID web site will serve as a library of “worked solutions” to common electronic sensing, control and interfacing requirements. From this site the AID user community can download and contribute instructions, parts lists, circuit diagrams and other information relevant to the creation of electronic art.
PD interative generative tool kit
These tools were developed by Grzesiek Sedek as part of his personal artistic research and are offered here for those interested in real time creativity online. They are for generating audio and video effects.
